Josh is racing on Saturday, May 24 at Baer Field Speedway in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In the season opener on May 10, Josh was the fastest qualifier in the AR Bodies Late Model Class, and he finished the feature race in 2nd place with Harley Tucker as the Racing for HoPE co-driver.
This week, Shawn Vincent Pederson from Eau Claire, Wisconsin will be Racing for HoPE with Josh in the #09 Families for HoPE Chevy late model. 14 year-old Shawn was born with Semi Lobar Holoprosencephaly. His mom tells us that he has been diagnosed with spastic quadriparesis and a seizure disorder for which he takes medication. Shawn is non-verbal and non-ambulatory as a result of his diagnosis, and therefore, requires one-on-one assistance for all pre-academic, social, daily living, and transitional activities.
That’s enough talk about what he has; let’s talk about who Shawn is! He is an extremely friendly, socially-interactive boy who loves school and being a part of his peer group. While he loves school, his parents say that he loves racing even more than school, and he is a diehard NASCAR fan. Whenever a race is on TV, he giggles and squeals with excitement. His favorites are Wisconsin racers Matt Kenseth and Paul Menard.
Shawn hasn’t been to a race in person yet, but maybe he can convince his mom to give it a try just once and see how it goes. It looks like Red Cedar Speedway in Menomonie, WI races nearly every Friday night during racing season (hint, hint!).
Alright Shawn, are you ready to go racing? Let’s be the first car to cross the finish line and take the checkered flag on Saturday night!
